Imagine doing this, even without sheep, in the new moon dark

Got home at 10pm, except with my truck dead I had to borrow Kathy's van, so I left it parked at her place, and decided to come through the woods. There is no path from Kathy's to our back fence, just woods, and some slightly easier to get through areas.
It seems to be nearly a new moon tonight, and very dark, yet it never occured to me that Jack might not be able to get me home safely through 5 acres of woods. I just took up gentle contact on about 4 ft of leash, and told him to "go" and off we went, weaving through trees and over logs that I can't even see. Things that I could see looked vastly different at night, and with my bad vision plus what little light was causing horrible glare on my glasses, there's no way I could see where I was going. Jack stopped when we got to the gate on our fence, then resumed his guide dog duty down the fenceline to the clearing, veering off in the usual places, coming back to the fence, pausing at stuff I had to step over.

So he can be a good dog.
