If we had larger litters ourselves....

We wouldn't fall for stuff like this (cat study). Or this (neotony at it's best). Fewer offspring makes humans more valuable, and given how long we care for our young, that just exaggerates the effect. So our adults are wired to go ga ga over small defenseless things that mimic human infants.

Of course, without this some of our domestic animals might never have been domesticated, especially dogs and cats, and many of our dog breeds wouldn't exist at all.
